New shirt I made

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

On my birthday I made a point to myself to seriously start making clothes.

This is made with a thin cotton gauze fabric with a woven stripe in it. It has pleats on the front and back that get shorter the further you move from the centre and a high collar. It’s all finished with french and flat felled seams, it’s quite professional. I was surprised with myself. I originally meant to make it much longer like a dresss, but I made a mistake when cutting the pieces. But I’m very happy with it overall. Wearing something you made is a wonderful feeling.

Earthquake in Japan

Monday, August 10th, 2009

There was a strong earthquake in Japan on Sunday that was felt in Tokyo and surrounding areas. Luckily there was no damage and there is no fear of a tsunami.

There is nothing that scares me more, nothing that makes me feel as helpless as the earth shaking under my feet. Pretty ironic that ultimately I’d like to live in Japan. We get really nasty ones in Greece too. Ten years ago a major one crushed hundreds of people under their houses. We slept in the car for days in fear of aftershocks. One of the things I was looking forward to when I moved to the UK is that they never get any.

Tokyo is now long overdue for a major earthquake. It simply terrifies me that everything I love could be erased in any moment. Japan’s major eathquakes can last several minutes – can you imagine?

This is what happened to Kobe in 1995.
